Course of the match
Bolzano got straight down to business without much ado. With lots of movement and sometimes over-hard man-to-man action. The Red Bulls had an early powerplay, but were not yet dangerous. After that, the home side put pressure on Atte Tolvanen's goal, but only had a few good shots at first, which were always dangerous. In the 7th minute, Atte Tolvanen kept his cool in a wild scramble. The Red Bulls defended consistently and occasionally had good shots on goal during quick counter-attacks, but these were saved by the best goalkeeper in the league, Sam Harvey. After the first 20 minutes, in which both teams scored with tight defending, the teams went into the break goalless.
The second period was more back and forth and the game became more open. Bolzano had a good opportunity at 3 on 2 (23'). Followed by the first good Italian power play (from the 25th), the Salzburg defense stood firm. But the spaces were no longer as tight and that pleased the Red Bulls, who became increasingly dangerous in offense. Real chances still had to be worked hard for, the duels for every centimeter of ice were fought hard. A shot by Thomas Raffl from the face-off circle (37') was saved by Sam Harvey, while another Bolzano powerplay (from 38') was almost nipped in the bud. Both teams continued to play a close match at eye level and the score remained 0-0 after 40 minutes.
After an early, once again impeccable game with the shorthanded team, the game continued to go up and down. The heated atmosphere made things even tougher and the duels were sometimes dirty. The home side then took the lead in the power play, Anthony Salinitri tapping the disc into the corner of the net from an acute angle (48'). Shortly afterwards, Benjamin Nissner had the equalizer on his stick right in front of the goalkeeper (50'), but could only finish with a backhand. The Red Bulls now pressed forward vehemently and created good scenes in front of goal, but also created opportunities for Breakaways. However, there were no more really compelling chances and after the empty-net goal (59'), Salzburg were beaten 2-0 after an intense final phase in Bolzano.
