Course of the game
After the initial five minutes of continuous pressure from Salzburg, Benjamin Nissner put the Red Bulls ahead (7') and was in the right place on a rebound from Innsbruck goalie Jakob Brandner in the power play. Exactly 60 seconds later, the same striker nailed the disc into the net after a sugar pass from Tyler Lewington for a 2:0 lead (8.). Salzburg continued to control the game, Innsbruck rarely got in front of Atte Tolvanen's goal. The Red Bulls played like they were on top and created chance after chance. Luca Auer hit the bar from the turn (11th). Towards the end of the third period, the visitors became more offensive and created dangerous individual chances. And promptly tied the game up, Patrick Grasso scoring from half-distance into the far corner (20'). The Red Bulls led 2:1 after 20 minutes.
The Red Bulls also took control in the second period to begin with, but Innsbruck now kept the game open and became dangerous not only during a power play (from 23). Nevertheless, the Red Bulls had significantly more possession, but for a long time they had their teeth out in Innsbruck's defense. Andrew Rowe came close to scoring after a short solo run down the left wing (36'), but it was Peter Schneider who scored shortly afterwards (38'), curling the deflected shot into the goal with his head and helmet to make it 3:1 after 40 minutes.
The Red Bulls did not let up and continued to be the driving force after the second break. However, Innsbruck also got stuck in Salzburg's defensive zone at times and pressed for the equalizer. As the game progressed, however, Salzburg created more and more chances and Jakob Brandner had to make more and more saves. In the end, the Red Bulls held on for a 3:1 win, who were the deserved winners after a goalless but very ambitious final period.
