Starting position
Just after half of the games played in the basic round, a group of seven has formed at the top, or rather in the top half of the table, separated by only nine points from first place (Székesfehérvár) to seventh place (Villach). The Red Bulls hold 6th place with three to four games less than the others and now want to use every game to climb further up the table.
A win against the 12th-placed Pioneers Vorarlberg is almost a must, as the Red Bulls have also won their three previous meetings with the Vorarlbergers so far this season. However, they will need another 'A-game' against Feldkirch, who are fighting for a place in the pre-playoffs, as recent results have shown. Before Christmas, the Pioneers were only beaten by Bolzano after a penalty shoot-out, they also lost narrowly 2-1 at VSV and in their last two games in Asiago and at home against Innsbruck (yesterday), they won 4-1 and 5-2 respectively.
Top forwards
The Pioneers' clear number 1 is Joshua Passolt. The 28-year-old American has settled in well in his first season in Europe and, with 15 goals, not only clearly tops his team's scorer list, but is also the fourth-best scorer in the entire league. The next best scorer from Vorarlberg is Brady Gilmour with 8 goals.
For the Red Bulls, this category is spread across several protagonists. In terms of goals, Peter Schneider, who also scored yesterday in Graz, and Troy Bourke lead the way with 10 goals. Followed by Mario Huber, Lucas Thaler and Thomas Raffl with 9 goals each. The Red Bulls' best player in terms of points is defenseman Ryan Murphy with 5 goals and 23 assists.
Still without a point, but happy after his comeback is Florian Baltram, who played his first competitive game of the season yesterday in Graz and is now looking forward to his first home game; the first since the sixth final game against the KAC on April 16 this year.
