Game recap
Three months and 26 days after his last game to date - the friendly against Glasgow Clan in Kaufbeuren on August 31st - striker Florian Baltram made his comeback in Graz today and probably also gave himself a little Christmas present. Peter Schneider was also back. The Red Bulls were missing Ali Wukovits, Niki Kraus, Vadim Schreiner, Thomas Raffl (sick), Lucas Thaler after an injury in yesterday's training (upper body) and Phillip Sinn (squad regulation).
The Red Bulls spent the first half of the opening period in the defensive zone, partly due to two shorthanded games. Goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen had his first tasks to solve, but did not get into trouble. Then the Red Bulls also became active going forward and opened up the game. Chances were still few and far between, even though Salzburg created some dangerous moments without embarrassing Graz back Jonas Gunnarsson. Just before the break, Marcus Vela latched onto a rebound right in front of goal and scored into the far corner to give the home side the lead (19').
The Red Bulls showed a different face in the second period and took the initiative. Peter Schneider rewarded this with a direct shot from the blue line to equalize the score at 1:1 (24'). Salzburg kept at it, hardly allowed anything at the back and took the lead. Nash Nienhuis scored from half-distance to make it 2:1 (30'), the Graz goalie had no view. Atte Tolvanen then thwarted the home side's top chance with the onrushing Jimmy Oligny (33') and almost immediately Benjamin Nissner was served at the left post on the other side and dribbled in for a 3:1 lead (34'). The Red Bulls had turned the game around and took a two-goal lead.
A lot of back and forth in the final third. Graz played to close the gap and stepped up the pace. Salzburg held their own and created opportunities themselves. But the pressure from Graz increased and after Atte Tolvanen was able to thwart two or three good chances, Trevor Gooch scored on the rebound to make it 2:3 (54'). In the sometimes hectic final phase, things got dicey again in front of the Salzburg goal, but the Red Bulls defended with vision and heart and got the deserved 3-pointer in Graz over time.
