Course of the game
For the derby in Upper Austria and two days before the CHL quarter-final second leg in Karlstad, the Red Bulls' personnel worries didn't get any smaller. Peter Schneider (after a 3-game injury layoff) and Dennis Robertson (after a 2-game suspension) were back. In addition to four long-term injuries, Thomas Raffl, Lucas Thaler and Lukas Schreier were also absent due to illness. The Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy forwards Constantin Humer (18), Laurin Sandholzer (19) and Maximilian Mackner (21), who all played their first professional game with the Red Bulls, stepped into the breach.
Linz got off to a good start, taking an early lead in the 5th minute with a deflected shot from Graham Knott that was unstoppable for David Kickert. Shortly afterwards, defender Paul Stapelfeldt fished away the exposed disk in front of the goal. The home side kept at it and increased their lead in the first power play of the game, with Sean Collins scoring a one-timer directly in front of goal (9'). It was not until the 10th minute that the Red Bulls managed their first good attack, with Philipp Krening fighting his way in front of Rasmus Tirronen's goal. From that moment on, the Red Bulls were fully back in the game. Peter Schneider and Peter Hochkofler (both 16.) had good chances from the slot, Maximilian Wurzer tried it alone directly in front of goal (19.). David Kickert thwarted Nico Feldner's chance after a short solo run (17') and thwarted another 100% chance with his stick hand. After a quick start by the home side, Salzburg were 2-0 down after 20 minutes.
After the break, Linz struck again, Graham Knott had a free shot from the left face-off circle and found the corner of the net (22'). The Red Bulls were on an equal footing, but hardly created any real chances. They were only really dangerous again on the powerplay in the 34th minute and Nash Nienhuis promptly scored the Red Bulls' first goal with a wrist shot from half distance. Shortly afterwards (35'), David Kickert was again on hand to save Nico Feldner's solo effort. The Red Bulls continued to press in the final minutes, but were unable to add to their tally in a generally even second period.
After Peter Hochkofler's first top chance (41') while short-handed, the final period was evenly contested. Graham Knott's solo effort (45') was again stopped by David Kickert. The Red Bulls fought for the next goal in an increasingly emotional game. It also became more hectic and the actions were often less precise. Chances now alternated, but Rasmus Tirronen was also fully present in some dicey scenes in front of his goal. In the end, the Red Bulls looked for their chance at 6 vs. 4 without a goalie, repeatedly interrupted by scuffles. Mario Huber then actually scored from an acute angle at 5-on-4 to make it 2:3 (60'). However, the Red Bulls were unable to equalize in the remaining 29 seconds and ultimately lost 2:3, but once again showed their great fighting spirit.
