The starting position
The Red Bulls are looking forward to their home game against Färjestad Karlstad with great anticipation, having put themselves in a good position yesterday in the ICE Hockey League derby with the Black Wings Linz with a 5:2 home win. The strong regular season (8th) and the victory in the round of 16 against Finland's runners-up Lahti Pelicans has given the Red Bulls a lot of tailwind and now they want to meet the next big European ice hockey club at eye level.
However, the Red Bulls will have to be at their best against last year's SHL quarter-finalists, as the Swedes are also delivering a really strong performance at the moment. After five wins in a row recently, the team of Swedish Head Coach Tomas Mitell - the entire coaching and staff team is Swedish - has climbed to second place in the SHL table. In the current CHL season, Färjestad BK finished the regular season as winners, winning all six games. In the round of 16, the Swedes beat Finland's Tappara Tampere by the narrow margin of 6:5 (3:2, 3:3 OT).
Ten-time Swedish champion
Färjestad is one of the most successful teams in the history of the Swedish top league SHL. Since its league debut in 1975, the club has won ten championships and reached the final a further eleven times. The Swedes only won their last title in the 2021/22 season. In their six previous appearances in the Champions Hockey League, Färjestad reached the round of 16 twice and the quarter-finals in 2023/24, where they were eliminated by eventual finalists Skellefteå AIK.
Former academy goalkeeper in Karlstad
The 19-year-old Italian Damian Clara, who trained at the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy from 2019 to 2022 and was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the NHL in 2023, continued his career with Färjestad Karlstad's U20 junior team directly after his time at the academy. He now shares the duties in the professional team with Canadian Maxime Lagacé and has already played 12 SHL and 2 CHL games this season.
