Decision in the CHL quarter-finals | Red Bulls visit Karlstad Peter Schneider: “We have to attack properly” // CHL PlayoffsEC Red Bull Salzburg will face Färjestad Karlstad in the Champions Hockey League quarter-final second leg tomorrow, Tuesday (19:00, ORF Sport+), taking a two-goal lead to Sweden. The Red Bulls won the first leg in Salzburg two weeks ago with 3:1 in a high-class match and thus defeated perhaps the best team in Europe at the moment. For the second leg in Karlstad, the Red Bulls are preparing for the toughest game of the season so far, in which everything simply has to go right to beat the current runners-up in the Swedish SHL table once again and advance to the semi-finals of the top flight (aggregate score, total number of goals decides). It would be the second time in Salzburg's club history after 2019.

The starting position
Ten-time Swedish champions, winners of this year's CHL regular season without defeat, currently second in the Swedish top league SHL and now with home advantage in the quarter-final second leg - there are hardly any obvious weaknesses to be found in Färjestad BK. And yet the Red Bulls won the first leg in Salzburg 3:1 and largely dominated the game against the favored Swedes.
The Red Bulls want to take the same approach in Karlstad and try not to let the Swedes into the game. The fact that a two-goal lead can quickly disappear was something the Salzburg team experienced just two years ago when they traveled to Engelholm in the CHL round of 16 against Sweden's Rögle BK, also with a 3-1 lead, only to lose the second leg 5-1.
Advantage flow or break?
The preparation for this deciding game could hardly have been more different. While in the SHL the last round was played on December 7 and then went into the IIHF international break - Färjestad BK thus had a nine-day break - the Red Bulls 'went through' and played three ICE Hockey League games in the last week. Since the November break, Karlstad has played 12 games including CHL (8 wins, 3 losses, 1 draw). The Red Bulls have 14 games under their belts (11 wins, three losses).

Ten-time Swedish champion
Färjestad is one of the most successful teams in the history of the Swedish top league SHL. Since its league debut in 1975, the club has won ten championships and reached the final a further eleven times. The Swedes only won their last title in the 2021/22 season. In their six previous appearances in the Champions Hockey League, Färjestad reached the round of 16 twice and the quarter-finals in 2023/24, where they were eliminated by eventual finalists Skellefteå AIK.

“There's a lot at stake for us. But we're also the underdogs and not many people expected us to be in this position. The start will be important for us. We want to come out of the locker room full of energy and not just sit back and defend. Two goals is a good lead, but to take that over 60 minutes, we have to really attack.”

CHL playoff mode
The first 16 teams in the 24-team field will contest the playoff round of 16. They play 1st against 16th, 2nd against 15th and so on. This results in the playoff tree up to the final. The play-off matches are decided by a first leg and a second leg, with the total number of goals (aggregate score) being decisive in the event of a tie. If the goal difference is equal after the second leg, 10 minutes of extra time with 3 outfield players and a goalkeeper will follow. If the extra time does not result in a decision, a penalty shoot-out follows with five shooters from each team. Thereafter, alternating until a decision is reached, if necessary. Only the final is decided in an all-important game.
