Course of the game
In addition to the six injured players who were already missing two days ago in Feldkirch, the Red Bulls also had to make do without defender Dennis Robertson, who was suspended for two games. Lukas Hörl stepped into the breach, meaning that nine players with a past in the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy were in Salzburg's lineup today.
Scott Kosmachuk, of all people, gave Salzburg an early lead on his first return to his former workplace in Villach, the Canadian scoring from the faceoff circle into the corner of the net on the power play (2nd). Shortly afterwards, Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen and his teammates were challenged for over a minute at 3 vs. 5 as the game got underway quickly and heatedly. With the teams evenly matched, it went back and forth really quickly, with VSV applying more pressure and creating more chances on home ice. The home side scored two or three times directly in front of goal. But out of nowhere, the Red Bulls scored again. Nash Nienhuis had no problems netting his first ICE goal from Philipp Krening's brilliant cross-pass at the right post (13'). There was a quick response this time, with Villach's top scorer Maximilian Rebernig scoring into the far corner just 25 seconds later to make it 2-1 (13'). And Villach went one better, with Guus van Nes scoring from an acute angle in the ensuing power play to equalize at 2:2 (16'). After a spectacular first period, the teams went into the dressing rooms at 2:2.
The game continued in the same vein. The attacking teams played at high speed and gave each other nothing. Salzburg had their first strong powerplay, followed shortly afterwards by the home side's equally dangerous one. It was alternately dangerous in front of both goals, with neither team able to build up a longer momentum. After another 20 intense but goalless minutes, the teams went into the dressing rooms for the second time and the final period had to be decisive.
Then there was spectacle again. Maximilian Rebernig put VSV ahead for the first time shortly after the restart with a deflected shot and his second goal of the day (42'). Just 10 seconds later, Scott Kosmachuk set off on a short solo run through the defense and also equalized with a backhand to make it 3:3 (42'). Villach went ahead again. Alex Wall scored from the blue line to restore VSV's lead (44'). And the hosts extended their lead, with Felix Maxa netting at the near post to make it 5:3 (47'). The Red Bulls stepped up their attacking efforts once more and the game went back and forth at breakneck speed, with the focal points changing. However, VSV then closed the spaces in front of the goal, defended a short-handed game with Joe Cannata, the 34-year-old American in goal, and finally won the spectacular top-of-the-table game against Salzburg 6:3 with an empty net goal.
