Course of the game
What a start! In the 4th minute, Troy Bourke got the disc at the blue line while shorthanded and completed the short solo with the goal to give the Red Bulls an early lead (without Florian Baltram, Nash Nienhuis, Ali Wukovits and Niki Kraus, who had a successful operation on Monday and will now be out for longer). The game continued evenly, with the Finns showing their class and dangerous shots on Atte Tolvanen's goal. However, the Red Bulls, for whom new signing Scott Kosmachuk made his debut, not only held their own, but also pushed forward vehemently. Thomas Raffl missed a top chance on the rebound, the disc skidding along the line behind Finnish goalkeeper Jasper Patrikainen (10th). Lahti's top scorer Lubos Horky then had the next chance for the visitors, shooting freely from the left face-off circle (14). The Red Bulls showed great vision and many good shots on goal in two subsequent overtime games, but the very deserved 1:0 lead after 20 minutes (3:1 aggregate score) remained.
Both teams continued their fast and good play in the second period. The Red Bulls gained a slight advantage in the physical game and had the better opportunities.Troy Bourke and Vadim Schreiner from half-distance on the rebound (23rd) as well as Mario Huber and Dennis Robertson (29th), who just missed the goal from close range.Lucas Thaler was then on hand with the rebound and the disc went over the shoe of an opposing defender and over the line for a 2:0 lead (30').Lahti continued to play hard for the first goal, but now also ran into counter-attacks.Peter Hochkofler had the next opportunity at 3 on 2 with a one-timer (35').The Finns then had their best spell, hitting the woodwork twice in almost two minutes of 5:3 power play, but were unable to break through against a Salzburg team that fought with self-sacrifice.The period came to an end with another top chance from Peter Hochkofler from the half-high slot (39.), the Red Bulls led with a total score of 4:1.
The Red Bulls struck again straight after the break. Philipp Krening completed a 3 on 2 from the right with his second CHL goal with a one-timer to make it 3:0 (42'). After that, it was almost all the home side playing, creating chance after chance and barely being able to get out of the offensive zone.Mario Huber was finally responsible for the fourth goal directly in front of goal (49').The game remained hot until the end as emotions were still running high, but the Red Bulls could no longer be denied victory.Atte Tolvanen underlined his strong performance in another short-handed game at the end and finally celebrated a shutout. And Peter Schneider's goal in the 57th minute put the finishing touches on a well-deserved 5:0 home win against the Lahti Pelicans.
