Course of the game
There was immediate fire in the match. Both teams played at a high tempo, not a second was wasted in 'getting to know each other'. The first good shots soon followed, but were not yet dangerous enough for Atte Tolvanen in the Salzburg goal and Rasmus Tirronen in the Linz goal. Peter Schneider's shot from half distance (7th) was more difficult to stop. The chances of the Red Bulls (still without four injured players) then improved, but the Upper Austrians - none of whom could really establish themselves - continued to press. Nico Feldner had Linz's first top chance after a solo effort from the blue line (50'). But it was the home side who struck first, Lukas Schreier deflecting Luca Auer's shot to score his first goal of the season (13'). In the ensuing Linz powerplay, Brian Lebler had a clear view from half-distance (16'), shortly afterwards Peter Schneider tried a hard one-timer from the face-off circle (17'). After an intense final phase, the Red Bulls led 1:0 after the first period.
The intensity remained high. The visitors equalized in the 24th minute. In the power play, Brian Lebler found the gap between the goalie and the bar to make it 1:1. Four minutes later, Mario Huber finished off a solo run with a spectacular lob under the crossbar to regain the lead (28'). Lucas Thaler was then quickest to react in the power play during a short scrum in front of goal and netted to make it 3:1 (31'). Linz stayed in contention. Once again, it was Brian Lebler who tied it up with a low shot in overtime (32'). It remained exciting, with both teams having further top-class chances in a fast-paced back-and-forth until the end of the period. After 40 minutes, the Red Bulls were still one goal ahead.
The picture was the same in the final third. Both teams played for the next goal with high intensity and hard physical play. Linz's Niklas Würschl was unable to get past Atte Tolvanen after a short solo run (47'). Lucas Thaler had the goal on his stick after a cross pass from Scott Kosmachuk (49'). The Canadian then did it himself shortly afterwards with a well-directed shot from the slot into the corner of the net (49'). And just 30 seconds later, Thomas Raffl broke through on the left wing and tucked the puck into the net for a 5:2 lead. That was to be it, even if the visitors did not let up and kept the game exciting until the end. In the end, the Red Bulls won 5:2 thanks to their better chance conversion and once again impressed with their offensive field hockey against a strong Linz team.
