Course of the game
After an orderly start on both sides, the Red Bulls gradually increased the pressure and soon created their first chances. Luca Auer's shot in front of the visitors' goalkeeper Alex Caffi went just wide (6th). But the Vorarlberg team kept up the pace at first, even though the Red Bulls had far more possession. Then the home side's chances improved. Scott Kosmachuk with a rebound from close range (13th), Lucas Thaler with a backhand right in front of goal (13th), Dennis Robertson on a rebound (14th) and Peter Hochkofler with plenty of time from an acute angle (15th). But it was the visitors who took the lead. Ross MacDougall shot hard from the slot in the first power play of the game and buried the shot behind David Kickert in the net (17'). Lucas Thaler had the answer, shooting from the left face-off circle in the 19th minute to score a long-overdue goal for the Red Bulls. The 1:1 was also the score at the break after 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Red Bulls immediately took control, Feldkirch could only get some breathing space with occasional breakaways. Then the Red Bulls rewarded themselves with a double strike. Mario Huber hammered the disc into the net from the slot in the power play with his 100th goal for the Red Bulls (26'), just 21 seconds later the 19-year-old Vadim Schreiner (who later went off injured) converted a short pass in front of goal ice-cold with his third goal of the season (27'). The Pioneers then stepped up their attacking game again, but were hardly dangerous. In another strong Salzburg powerplay, it was only Alex Caffi in the Feldkirch goal who prevented the home side from scoring again. However, there was nothing to stop Benjamin Nissner's deflected shot (39') and so the Red Bulls took a deserved and comfortable 4:1 lead into the second break.
There were a few turbulent scenes at the beginning of the final period, as a result of which the Red Bulls played more than two minutes 3:5 short-handed, but thanks to consistent defensive work, a David Kickert on the post and luck with a shot from the bar of the guests (44th), they did not allow anything. Salzburg were barely at full strength when they went back in front. Mario Huber then crowned his strong performance with his second goal after a fine individual effort in front of the opposing goal (49'). The Red Bulls controlled the encounter with further opportunities until the end and were ultimately delighted with a well-deserved home win against the Pioneers Vorarlberg.
