Starting position
It is one of the classics that has been inextricably linked with the win2day ICE Hockey League for many years. Salzburg versus Linz is a true sporting rivalry, both on the ice and in both fan camps. The fact that the Krampusse will also be joining in on Sunday at the Eisarena Salzburg lends the derby additional welcome entertainment potential in its first edition this season.
In sporting terms, it could hardly be more exciting. The Red Bulls have performed strongly in both the Champions Hockey League and the ICE Hockey League in recent weeks and, after seven wins in a row, were only halted yesterday by Olimpija Ljubljana with a 2:1 away defeat on penalties. Linz, who seem to have found their feet after a difficult start to the season and can go into the game on an eight-game winning streak (!), can go one better. The Upper Austrians also beat Pustertal 3-2 yesterday and climbed to fourth place in the table. The Red Bulls lurk just behind them in fifth place with just one point less (and two games less).
Brian Lebler leads the way (as usual)
This story is also part of the ICE Hockey League. The Black Wings Linz are inextricably linked to Brian Lebler, who has been scoring goals for the Steel Cities since 2011 (with an interruption of one season in Ingolstadt and the 2022 playoffs with the Red Bulls, including the championship title) and has long since become a legend throughout the league. The 36-year-old Austro-Canadian is currently Linz's top scorer with 12 goals, followed by Luka Maver and Shawn St-Amant with 7 and 6 goals respectively.
Salzburg captain Thomas Raffl has also long enjoyed legendary status in Austria and, even at the age of 38, continues to underpin this with consistently strong performances. At the Red Bulls, however, the top scorers are spread across more players than in Linz. The top seven forwards have scored between 9 and 6 goals. Peter Schneider and Troy Bourke have scored 9 goals each, Thomas Raffl 7.
