Match report
In the clash against the league leaders, the Juniors got off to a committed start and looked to go forward early on. Both teams created dangerous chances in the opening minutes, but it was the Eagles who scored first: Paul Schmid put Kitzbühel 1:0 ahead in the 9th minute after a pass from Paolo Wieltschnig. The young Salzburg team tried to equalize and even had an overtime situation, but were unable to take advantage of it. Shortly before the end of the first period (18th), Kitzbühel increased the lead to 2:0 through Christopher Schutz in the powerplay.
The Red Bulls came out of the dressing room with renewed vigor and showed much more drive in the second period. However, an early period of being short-handed put the brakes on their momentum. Back at full strength, the game was evenly poised. In the 27th minute, Leon Kolarik scored the equalizer to make it 1:2 after a clever pass from Philipp Krening, when he ran alone towards the Kitzbühel goalkeeper and finished confidently. The hosts responded promptly and pressed to restore the gap. Despite the Juniors' compact defense, the Eagles took advantage of another power play in the 38th minute: Matic Podlipnik scored to make it 3:1.
The start of the final period was unfortunate for Salzburg. Niklas Ketonen converted a penalty in the 41st minute to make it 4:1. This early goal left its mark and the Red Bulls were unable to find a way back into the game. Sebastian Christiansen increased the lead to 5:1 in the 45th minute and Kitzbühel finally took control. Tim Geifes scored the final goal in the 52nd minute to make it 6:1. Despite some offensive actions in the final minutes, the Juniors were denied another goal.
