Game report
With forwards Karl Pohle and Tim Heimel as well as goalkeeper Luca Haitzmann, three talents from the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy celebrated their debut in the Alps Hockey League. Haitzmann, who is only 17 years old, was in goal from the start and made some strong saves against the attacking Val Gardena team in the opening minutes. The young Salzburgers quickly got into the game and an intense exchange of blows developed with numerous chances on both sides. However, both goalkeepers kept a clean sheet and the score remained 0-0 after 20 minutes.
In the middle period, the Red Bulls came out of the dressing room with a lot of energy and put their opponents under pressure early on. They deservedly took the lead in the 22nd minute: After a shot by Maximilian Wurzer from the blue line, Daniel Assavolyuk deflected it unstoppably to make it 1:0. Bolstered by the lead, the Juniors stepped up the pace and also survived a short-handed situation unscathed. The game remained evenly poised and both teams created top-class opportunities. Salzburg missed the chance to extend their lead in a 5-on-3 situation. Val Gardena pushed for the equalizer in the final phase of the second period, but Haitzmann shone with outstanding saves and held on to the narrow lead.
In the final third, the Red Bulls did everything they could to defend and extend their lead. But Val Gardena made effective use of their chances: In the 45th minute, Yuri Cristellon equalized to make it 1:1. Just one minute later (46th), the hosts turned the game around completely when Simon Pitschieler converted a 3-on-1 situation to take a 2:1 lead. Despite numerous shots (a total of 22 shots on goal in the final third) and great efforts, Salzburg were unable to find a way past the strong Val Gardena goalkeeper Paul Hofer. In the 51st minute, James Bradley McGowan increased the score to 3:1 for the home side. In the final two minutes, the Juniors took goalkeeper Haitzmann off the ice for an extra outfield player. This tactical move paid off in the 59th minute when Lukas Hörl scored the equalizer to make it 2:3 after an assist from Daniel Assavolyuk. Despite further chances and tireless efforts, there was not enough time to equalize and take the game into overtime.
