Game report
Without Nick Maul and Paul Vinzens, who are currently being allowed to prove themselves in professional training at EHC Red Bull Munich, the Juniors faced an evenly matched opponent. The Polar Bears tested goalkeeper Thomas Pfarrmaier early on, but Salzburg's defense held firm. The visitors then created their first chances, but were also unable to capitalize on an overtime situation. After the penalty expired, an open exchange of blows developed: Frederik Widen hit the bar for Zell am See (8th) and the Juniors countered with dangerous attacks, but failed to score against goalie Max Zimmermann. Shortly before the end of the first period, the hosts became undisciplined. In a 5-on-3 situation, Philipp Wimmer only hit the woodwork (20th), meaning they went into the break goalless
The Red Bulls began the second period with the advantage, but were unable to capitalize on the remaining seconds. The game continued with a high tempo and fast transition actions, both teams fought for every inch. In the 26th minute, the Polar Bears had a great chance to take the lead on a 2-on-1 counter-attack, but Pfarrmaier made a spectacular save. The Juniors survived a subsequent short-handed situation without conceding a goal and had another powerplay opportunity themselves. Despite intensive efforts, both teams initially failed to score. It was not until the 40th minute that Robin Johansson took advantage of an overtime situation with a shot from the blue line to make it 1:0 for the home side.
In the final period, the oldest team in the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy tried everything to equalize. In the 43rd minute, however, they had to play shorthanded again, but defended consistently. Shortly afterwards (46'), Matt McLeod increased the lead to 2:0 for Zell am See. The momentum was now with the hosts, who continued to exert pressure. Salzburg stepped up the pace, but were unable to find a way past the Polar Bears' compact defense. In the last two minutes of the game, the Juniors took the goalkeeper off the ice in order to force a final goal with an additional outfield player. However, the Zeller remained steadfast and Max Zimmermann thwarted all chances. 54 seconds before the end (60.) Nicklas Huard scored into the orphaned goal to make it 3:0.
