Game report
The first few minutes of the game were even, but there were no dangerous scoring chances at first. A two-minute penalty (8th) gave the Juniors a brief period of pressure and tested Ritten goalkeeper Colin Furlong for the first time. The Italians then also had their first chances, but Luca Kogler converted Adrian Gesson's pass to give the Juniors a 1:0 lead in the 12th minute. Inspired by this goal, the Red Bulls took control of the game. Vadim Schreiner took advantage of this and converted Nick Maul's rebound in the 17th minute to make it 2:0. Despite continuing to make dangerous attempts, the Rittner Buam were unable to overcome the Juniors goalkeeper Valentin Ankirchner even when they were outnumbered late on.
The young Salzburg team started the second period with another overtime opportunity, with Ethan Szypula almost scoring the equalizer after a quick mistake (23'). However, Ankirchner saved the 1-on-0 situation with aplomb. The home side now looked much stronger, but were repeatedly slowed down by penalties. The Red Bulls took advantage of this to shoot at goal from all angles - but failed to score again. Back at full strength, a game at eye level developed. Philipp Wimmer tried a solo attempt (31'), but was caught offside. Both teams failed to score when outnumbered (32nd & 36th), and hard-fought final minutes rounded off a goalless middle third.
In the final period, the Rittner Buam did everything they could to close the gap. With high speed and physical play, they forced the young Salzburg team to make mistakes. However, they defended strongly, were compact defensively and blocked shots. The Red Bulls countered the fast build-up play of the South Tyroleans with aggressive forechecking. The game went back and forth, with chances on both sides. Luca Kogler just missed the top edge of the crossbar (54') and Tobias Graf found himself alone in front of an empty goal after an unfortunate build-up pass, but Ankirchner saved at the last second (55'). The final minutes were extremely physical and characterized by a high tempo. In the last two minutes of the game, the Rittner Buam were outnumbered and withdrew their goalkeeper in favor of a sixth outfield player. In the 59th minute of the game, Marco Insam finally managed to beat Ankirchner and the game ended with a 2:1 victory for the Red Bull Hockey Juniors.
