Game report
The Red Bull Hockey Juniors started with enormous speed and dominated the game right from the start. The home side created good chances early on, but just missed out on the lead. Despite convincing attacks, Meran remained compact defensively and gave the Juniors very little space. Even in an overpayment situation (11th) no goal could be scored. Towards the end of the first period, the Italians also had their first dangerous chances when they were outnumbered, but goalkeeper Valentin Ankirchner made strong saves to prevent a goal, meaning the first period ended goalless.
In the second period, the visitors from Italy came out of the dressing room with more momentum. An early penalty (23rd) against the Juniors allowed the South Tyroleans to build up pressure in superior numbers. Despite being short-handed, however, the Juniors managed to score the first goal: Nick Maul set up the counter-attack and Vadim Schreiner scored in the ensuing 2-on-1 situation to make it 1-0 (26). The Juniors also defended another short-handed situation with aplomb, and back at full strength they took control again. In the 35th minute, Maximilian Wurzer increased the lead to a deserved 2:0 after a pass from Lars Bosecker.
The Juniors kept up the high tempo in the final period. The game became more physical and the home side created several overtime situations (42nd & 45th). However, the score remained 2:0 Juniors for the time being. The Juniors only managed to strike again in another short-handed situation and Paul Vinzens increased the lead to 3:0 in the 49th minute. The South Tyroleans were not impressed by this and took advantage of an overtime situation, with Massimo Pietroniro reducing the deficit to 3:1 in the 52nd minute. Merano now gained momentum: Patrick Madsen made it 3:2 in the 55th minute, and shortly afterwards Pietroniro (55) equalized to make it 3:3. In the final minutes, both teams battled for victory; in the end, it was Vadim Schreiner who sealed the 4:3 final score for the Juniors with his second goal in the 59th minute.
