Match report
The game started at eye level, with both teams focusing on high speed and hard-fought duels from the very first minute. The Juniors, who had to play without Lukas Hörl and Maximilian Kirchebner, who are currently playing for EC Red Bull Salzburg, quickly got into the game and gained more and more possession. They took advantage of this superiority in the 13th minute: After a quick counterattack, Adrian Gesson gave the Juniors a deserved lead after preparatory work by Leon Kolarik and Jesse Kauhanen.
In the second period, the home side came out of the dressing room with much more pressure. Cortina created good chances, but Salzburg goalkeeper Thomas Pfarrmaier showed his class with strong saves. The game became increasingly physical, reminiscent of last season's intense semi-final series. In the 36th minute, Kris Pietroniro made the most of a concealed shot to equalize for Cortina.
In the final third, the spectators were treated to a thrilling back-and-forth. Both teams played to win, but both Pfarrmaier and his counterpart, Hayden Hawkey, prevented further goals with strong saves. Neither the Juniors nor Cortina were able to capitalize on their powerplay chances, meaning the game went into overtime. In the 65th minute, it was Leon Kolarik who sealed the win for the Juniors with a breakaway goal.
