The starting position Europe's top 24 teams play in the Champions Hockey League. With Skellefteå AIK, the Red Bulls will face perhaps the best European team at the moment right at the start of the regular season, as the Swedes are not only champions of their country, but also reached the CHL final last season (losing 3-2 to Genève-Servette).
Skellefteå AIK has tested three times in preparation. At the Swedish second division club IF Björklöven, Skellefteå won 6:5 after overtime. They then lost at home to MoDo Hockey 2:3 after extra time and a week ago the Swedish champions won 4:3 against Luleå HF.
The Red Bulls experienced the quality of the Swedes first-hand last year when they also lost 4-0 in the CHL opener in Skellefteå.

Statement Thomas Raffl
“The team is ready to go and what better way to start than with a top-class game. We know the team well from last year and have to be ready from the start. We have to be compact, not give them any big chances and be ice-cold up front. We're also really looking forward to finally playing at home in front of our own fans again.”

24 teams play in the regular season. Each team has six games against six different opponents, which are allocated by lot. This means that each team has three home games and three away games against six different opponents. Teams from the same league cannot play each other in the regular season. The results of the regular season (3-point ranking) are used to produce a ranking of all 24 teams.
The first 16 teams qualify for the play-off round of 16, with 1st playing against 16th, 2nd against 15th and so on. This results in the playoff tree up to the final. The play-off matches are decided by a first and second leg, with the total number of goals (aggregate score) being decisive in the event of a tie. Only the final is decided in an all-important match.
