Game recap
You can feel a special tingling sensation when the Red Bulls from Salzburg and Munich meet. The players on the ice quickly shed any nervousness they might have had and delivered a heated duel in the first period. While Munich had a slight field advantage at the beginning, the Salzburg team became more pressing at the back and ensured an evenly-matched duel. Salzburg's Nikolaus Kraus missed the first chance to take the lead (6th) when he missed the goal by a hair's breadth with a follow-up shot. Munich then took the lead. Former academy striker Nikolaus Heigl had the right touch in a scramble in front of David Kickert's goal (14). Two minutes later, Peter Schneider beat Munich goalie Mathias Niederberger from an acute angle in the power play (16') to make it 1:1 at the break.
Nothing was given away. Salzburg got off to the better start in the second period and took the lead for the first time in the 22nd minute. Tyler Lewington scored from close range with a follow-up shot. Munich's answer was Veit Oswald, who scored in the 27th minute alone in front of goal. In a game that was heated at times, Salzburg pushed forward and then came the hour of 18-year-old striker Vadim Schreiner, who only made his debut with Salzburg last week. The academy player took a cheeky shot from half-distance and scored his first professional goal to give Salzburg a 3:2 lead at the break.
Munich then pressed for the equalizer and had a few good opportunities in the first few minutes of the final third, while Salzburg tried to create chances at speed from defence. The last ten minutes were played with an open goal, which was also reflected in the toughness of the duels. Goalkeeper David Kickert played a big part in ensuring that Salzburg held on to their lead in the final phase against six pressing Munich outfield players and Luca Auer finally sealed the deal with an empty-net goal 34 seconds before the end.
