Course of the game
The Red Bull Hockey Juniors had to play the fifth game of the best-of-seven series without their Head Coach Teemu Levijoki due to illness. Nevertheless, the encounter got off to an even start. Both teams tried to score the opening goal, but there were no big chances at first. In the 5th minute, Diego Cuglietta took advantage of the first overtime opportunity of the game and scored to make it 1:0 for the home side. However, the Red Bull Hockey Juniors equalized again in the 10th minute through Vadim Schreiner. A subsequent spell of superior numbers allowed Cortina to become dangerous again, but the Red Bulls defended strongly. The young Salzburgers were now able to take control of the game and put the Italians under pressure with strong chances. However, Hayden Hawkey - as well as Paul Vinzens from close range (18th) - could not be beaten.
The Juniors got off to a strong start in the second period, but had to survive the next short-handed situation in the 24th minute; however, Cortina was denied by goalkeeper Simon Wolf. Buoyed by the goalkeeper's support, the Red Bulls were back on the offensive and Julius Ramoser scored after a pass from Vadim Schreiner (29') to give them a 2:1 lead. The Italians promptly countered: Riccardo Lacadelli scored to make it 2:2 (30'), Jouka Juhola scored just 40 seconds later to make it 3:2 and Diego Cuglietta made it 4:2 while short-handed. The young Salzburgers did not find their game again and became undisciplined. Diego Cuglietta increased the lead to 5:2 (36') with his hat-trick in a 5-on-3 overtime situation and Marco Sanna made it 6:2 (37') in the following 5-on-4. The Juniors changed goalkeepers, but Thomas Pfarrmaier was also beaten by Gregory Di Tomaso in another overtime situation (39.) to make it 7:2.
In the final period, the exchange of blows clearly lost pace and the home side routinely played out the time. The Red Bulls were slow to get back to their game, but hindered themselves with further penalties. Midway through the final period, the young Salzburg side briefly increased the pressure and the pace. However, Cortina took control of the game again after another four-minute overtime. The third period remained goalless despite several chances. The Red Bull Hockey Juniors now have their backs to the wall and will have to fight against the end of the series in their home game on Saturday.
