Game recap
In contrast to the last game in Linz, this time the Red Bulls got off to the best possible start. In the very first minute, Thomas Raffl was fouled on a breakaway and Troy Bourke buried the penalty. Less than five minutes later, Linz goalkeeper Rasmus Tirronen had to reach behind him again as Mario Huber netted from half-distance during a 3-on-2 counter-attack to take an early 2:0 lead (6'). At this point, the game had long been an open exchange of blows, it went back and forth, both teams took turns creating good chances and there was hardly any time to take a deep breath. Overall, Salzburg had the better opportunities as the game progressed, but Atte Tolvanen also had to make repeated saves. Things got rougher towards the end, but the Red Bulls kept their composure and took a deserved lead into the first break with a more powerful final phase - Thomas Raffl alone produced two hard shots from the face-off circle.
The Red Bulls took a penalty from the first period into the second and now the visitors struck. Julian Pusnik deflected a shot in front of goal that was unstoppable for Atte Tolvanen (22'). Salzburg then turned up the pressure, shifting play to the Linz goal for the most part. Ryan Murphy and Lucas Thaler had chances from half-distance (26'), Benjamin Nissner had a free shot in the slot (27'). The ensuing powerplay also saw many shots go towards goal, but most of them got stuck in the tight defense. And then the Linzers were suddenly back, causing another alarm in front of Salzburg's goal from the 32nd minute, where Atte Tolvanen cleaned up. The Red Bulls soon opened the scoring again and Thomas Raffl restored the two-goal lead with a deflected shot from Ryan Murphy right in front of the goalkeeper (36'). 3:1 after 40 minutes.
In the final period, the home side first showed their defensive qualities in a really strong Linz powerplay. They then immediately scored their fourth goal. Chay Genoway had half the goal open after excellent preparatory work by his colleagues and netted from close range for a 4:1 lead (45'). This momentum and the victory could no longer be taken away from the Red Bulls. The game remained hotly contested until the end, but the Red Bulls continued to play in a controlled manner and, like the visitors, still had opportunities. Thomas Raffl scored the final goal when he surprised Rasmus Tirronen with a low shot from the half-high slot and made it 5:1 with his second goal of the day. That was the deserved final score and the Red Bulls now travel back to Linz on Saturday with the 2:1 series lead.
