Course of the game
A lightning start for the Black Wings Linz, with Nico Feldner netting on a rebound at the right post in the second minute to give the home side an early lead. They continued to press forward and dominated play for long stretches of the first period, in which both teams again played hard but disciplined. Peter Schneider had Salzburg's first top chance (7th) with a clear view from close range, but was unable to beat Linz goalkeeper Rasmus Tirronen. Shortly afterwards (9), Linz's Brian Lebler took a dangerous shot from half-right, but Atte Tolvanen caught the shot. The same striker then shot at the Finnish goalkeeper (11'), who was lucky as the rebound ended up on goal after a brief confusion. The Red Bulls rarely got in front of goal, but were really dangerous when they did. Like Ryan Murphy (17'), who missed from an acute angle. The last big chance belonged to the home side with a 2-on-1 counter-attack with Shawn St-Amant (19'), and Linz led 1-0 at the first break.
In the second period, the Red Bulls increasingly took control of the offense, even though Atte Tolvanen initially had to clear alone against Emilio Romig (23'). The Red Bulls spent a lot of time in the attacking zone and often shot from distance, but did not get the rebounds properly or only rarely. Linz remained dangerous on the counter-attack and occasionally created explosive moments in front of Salzburg's goal. Like in the 33rd minute, when Chay Genoway stopped Shawn St-Amant's solo shot as he fell. But in the end, events came thick and fast. 61 seconds before the second break, Logan Roe increased Linz's lead to 2:0 while short-handed. 12 seconds before the break, Thomas Raffl scored with a backhand in the power play to tie the game at 1-2 and then Lucas Thaler scored from a tight angle just seven seconds later (39:55) to equalize at 2-2. What an equalizer from Salzburg's point of view.
However, Linz took the lead again in the 45th minute, with Brian Lebler successfully following up on a rebound from the turn. The Red Bulls pushed forward even more, where it became even tighter in front of goal and the home side lurked for breakaways. Intense duels were now constantly taking place in the Linz zone, with Salzburg incessantly going for goal. Lucas Thaler narrowly missed the net with a powerful shot (52') and the Salzburg pressure increased. Benjamin Nissner had the goal on his stick in the slot (57'). In the final phase with six field players, the air was really burning again, but the goal was not to go in. The Red Bulls ultimately lost a battling game 2:3 and Linz equalized the series at 1:1.
Statement from Oliver David
"Overall it was a good game, but in the end we sometimes didn't make the best decisions with the glass and were too complicated. We knew what to expect in Linz and were able to handle the pressure well, as the two goals to equalize showed. But we didn't play quite as convincingly in the final third, which is what we need over the full 60 minutes."
