Course of the game
The Red Bull Hockey Juniors started the first game in the final for the Austrian championship at high speed. After just 30 seconds, Philipp Krening opened the scoring after a pass from Vadim Schreiner (1.) to take the lead in a hotly contested game. The Juniors then continued to put pressure on Zell am See goalkeeper Max Zimmermann. But captain Hubert Berger countered with the equalizer for the Eisbären in the 7th minute of the game. With chances on both sides, the exciting game went up and down, with the home side setting the pace. Despite being outnumbered, the Juniors were unable to regain the lead for the time being.
In the second period, the Juniors pressed for the equalizer right from the start, but were thwarted by the Polar Bears' goalkeeper. It took until the 25th minute when Vasily Zelenov was able to beat him after a pass from Jesse Helander. This unleashed the Juniors and Daniel Assavolyuk increased the lead to 3:1 just 36 seconds later (25th). The visitors from Zell am See remained unimpressed and continued to fight, but were unable to score the final goal despite an overtime opportunity.
The final period got off to another even start. The game was physical and fast-paced, characterized by many changes of direction. A great chance did not crystallize in the first half of the final period. As the game progressed, the Juniors managed to take control of the game, but Zell am See remained dangerous on the counter-attack. Simon Wolf - the home side's goalkeeper - did a great job of defusing these. The Juniors established themselves in the Eisbären's third and fired shot after shot at the Zell am See goalkeeper, but failed to finish. The Polar Bears only got back into the game when they were outnumbered, but were unable to capitalize on this either. The Red Bull Hockey Juniors will therefore travel to the KE Kelit Arena Zell am See on Saturday, February 10, 2024, for the decisive clash with a two-goal lead thanks to the aggregate score.
