Game recap
The Red Bulls started in Asiago with the same lineup as on Friday against Graz (without Peter Schneider, Ryan Murphy and Benjamin Nissner) and put a lot of pressure on the home side. However, almost three times as many shots on goal were not enough for the Red Bulls to score in the first period, with Asiago goalkeeper Marco De Filippo Roia keeping a clear view even in heavy traffic in front of his goal area. Going forward, the home side made pinpricks and were highly dangerous. The first top chance from Matteo Gennaro (5') was thwarted by Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen, but two minutes later he had to let the shot from Michele Stefan pass (7'). The Red Bulls were 1-0 down after 20 minutes, partly because Atte Tolvanen was once again beaten by the free-standing Alex Ierullo.
Salzburg increased the pressure in the second half and also had better chances. Mario Huber (24) and Troy Bourke (26) were unlucky in front of goal. At the other end, Asiago (27) hit the bar in the powerplay. From the middle of the game, Asiago did a bit more on offense, but the Red Bulls remained dominant, just not converting. Chay Genoway scored from close range after a counter-attack (33'), as did Thomas Raffl with a hammer shot from the slot (36'). But a single counter-attack was enough for the Italians to turn the game on its head again. Giordano Finoro was sent on his way in the 40th minute and gave the home side a 2:0 lead.
The Red Bulls were finally rewarded in the 46th minute. Troy Bourke deflected Dennis Robertson's shot on the power play to make it 1:2. The game then became hectic, Salzburg continued to play forward, but the Asiaghesi now disrupted the game earlier. Nevertheless, the Red Bulls remained in control of the game and Lucas Thaler netted a one-timer to level the scores at 2:2 (54'). The game went into extra time, in which Salzburg had to play the final 90 seconds short-handed, but managed to save themselves for the penalty shoot-out. And the Red Bulls won that with Ali Wukovits' goal on the 10th penalty, after Salzburg's Troy Bourke and Giordano Finoro had scored for Asiago. The Red Bulls deserved the extra point and won the fourth season duel with the Italians with a lot of effort.
