Game recap
There was immediate fire in the game. The Red Bulls (without Thomas Raffl, Peter Schneider and Ryan Murphy) started strongly. Peter Hochkofler had the first good chance early on with a rebound (2nd). A short time later (5th), two Villach players suddenly went in alone on Atte Tolvanen's goal, but wasted the disc and at the same time Salzburg's Troy Bourke and Villach's Alexander Rauchenwald got into a fistfight. The game continued on an even keel, with both teams working hard up front and taking plenty of shots on goal. The momentum changed back and forth. The Red Bulls then laid siege to the visitors' goal in the second half of the opening period, covering Villach goalkeeper JP Lamoureux with a number of shots and forcing repeated scrambles in front of goal. Florian Baltram perhaps had the best chance from close range (19th). Villach limited themselves to counter-attacks in this phase, but were then highly dangerous. As was the case with Andrew Desjardins' one-timer from half distance (16'). However, no goals were scored in the fast-paced first period.
Salzburg continued to play with an aggressive forecheck and shifted most of the action into the attacking zone at the start of the second period. In the 27th minute, the visitors scored in the powerplay, but the goal was disallowed after video evidence. But one minute later, the disc was in again (28'), Robert Sabolic scored freely from the half-high slot to give Villach the lead. The Red Bulls continued to attack, Benjamin Nissner (49) and Phillip Sinn (51) with good shots from a half-left position. Dennis Robertson then equalized (31), tucking Drake Rymsha's pass into the Villach goal with a one-timer from half-distance. The game continued with opportunities on both sides until Lucas Thaler let out a hammer from the slot and slotted the disc in for a 2:1 lead (38'). Just half a minute later, Lucas Thaler energetically went after a rebound and pushed the disc over the line for a 3:1 lead after 40 minutes (38').
Villach pressed for the equalizer after the break, but the Red Bulls continued to play a strong forecheck, defusing the visitors' attack and keeping JP Lamoureux busy. Mario Huber missed directly in front of goal (50'), Florian Baltram hit the crossbar from an acute angle (51'). But VSV remained dangerous and gained more of the play as the third progressed. In the 53rd minute, Drake Rymsha scored in the power play with a teammate offside, but the goal did not count. A short time later (54'), Drake Rymsha scored again from half-distance, like a copy of the first goal, to make the difference. The Red Bulls then played the game - it was Salzburg's Lukas Schreier's 200th league game and defender Cameron Schilling's first home game with the Red Bulls - consistently to the end, hardly conceded any more chances with a strong Atte Tolvanen in goal and ultimately ran out deserved 4:1 winners.
