Game recap
Exactly 1:16 minutes had been played when Troy Bourke scored immediately after winning a face-off, surprising Linz goalkeeper Rasmus Tirronen and giving the Red Bulls (without Peter Schneider, Thomas Raffl and Chay Genoway) the early lead. After that it was up and down with a lot of speed, but the Red Bulls had much more time in the offensive zone than the hosts in the first period and often tried from distance. Many shots, but real chances were still rare at first, Benjamin Nissner had one from the left face-off circle (17th) that just missed the goal. Atte Tolvanen in the Salzburg goal did not have to intervene often, but was on hand for the dangerous Linz moments. Overall, the Red Bulls played a good first period, in which they hardly allowed Linz to develop with a powerful forecheck.
In the second period, Linz put more into the game and pressed for goal in the first three minutes. However, Ali Wukovits had the first good chance after a pass on the left (25'), but his shot was just blocked by a stick. Linz's Brian Lebler then threatened to go one-on-one (29), but was pushed away before finishing. Troy Bourke then had a chance on the rebound in front of goal (32'), Salzburg now took control of the game more and more again, regularly putting the ball dangerously in front of the net and keeping Rasmus Tirronen busy. Outnumbered, Ali Wukovits had the next chance on a breakaway (37'), but he was stopped decisively. Things got heated at the end after Atte Tolvanen was knocked over for the second time. Defensively, however, the Red Bulls did not let anything get in their way and still led 1:0 after 40 minutes.
In the third period, the home side managed to equalize almost from the cold. Immediately after one of Salzburg's rare spells of superior possession, Nico Feldner scored on a breakaway from full stretch into the far corner (44'). Suddenly, Linz were back in the game and gave the Red Bulls an intense exchange of blows with much tougher physical play. The conspicuous Lucas Thaler had the next opportunity with a one-timer after a counter-attack from half-distance (51'), then also once with a backhand (56'). Paul Huber also fought his way in front of goal, but was unable to get past Tirronen (57'). In the final three minutes, only the Red Bulls played and shot incessantly at goal, but were unable to score. After a thrilling but goalless overtime, in which Atte Tolvanen made three or four really strong saves, Linz decided the game in a penalty shootout and secured their second point.
