Game recap
The game started with a cold shower. The Red Bulls, today with new signing Cameron Schilling in defense for the first time, ran into a counterattack in the very first minute and were down 0:1 after 45 seconds. Salzburg quickly set themselves up well and had the first good chance with Ali Wukovits (2nd) in front of Innsbruck goalkeeper Evan Buitenhuis. However, the home side increased the lead to 2:0 in the second powerplay (9.). After that, the Red Bulls mainly played in the offensive zone and created good chances; Thomas Raffl hit the right post in the powerplay (12.), Benjamin Nissner hit the bar (15.). But Atte Tolvanen still had to save a number of Innsbruck's top chances from counter-attacks. The last one was then one too many, Kevin Roy - the Canadian scored all three goals in the first period - was once again sent on his way and netted to give the home side a 3:0 lead at the break.
After the break, the Red Bulls upped the tempo noticeably, Mario Huber was unlucky with an early shot off the stick (23rd). And then it was Kevin Roy again who scored Innsbruck's fourth goal with a one-timer from the right face-off circle in the power play. But the Red Bulls did not stop. And were finally rewarded. Thomas Raffl scored Salzburg's first goal in double numerical superiority and scored on the rebound (28'). Four minutes later, Benjamin Nissner scored ice-cold from the half-high slot to reduce the deficit to 2:4 (31'). Salzburg continued to press, Innsbruck hardly got into the offensive. Mario Huber was again unlucky in the 1:1 in front of the goalie, who deflected the shot while lying down (38'). After a few more good shots and a much better game than in the first period, the Red Bulls were only two goals behind after 40 minutes.
The Red Bulls also initially took control of the game in the final period. In the 45th minute, the Sharks came back into the game with a good power play and from then on offered Salzburg an exchange of blows. Both teams now created chances at a high tempo. The Red Bulls pressed, but became increasingly bogged down in Innsbruck's defense. Until the powerplay in the 57th minute, which Florian Baltram ice-coldly finished off after a few seconds from the right face-off circle to make it 3-4. However, the Innsbruck team withstood the Red Bulls' final 3-minute offensive and held on for a 4:3 win against Salzburg, who were not rewarded for their fight in the final period.
