Game recap
Lucas Thaler had the first good Salzburg chance in the duel with Linz, but his shot from the right was still too central (2nd). The game opened up immediately, with the Red Bulls initially having more of the play. In a first good powerplay (4th), the good Linz goalie Rasmus Tirronen prevented a possible deficit several times. The Red Bulls then also held their own while short-handed. The chances got better, Atte Tolvanen caught the puck in the air after Emilio Romig's short solo run (9.). A short time later, however, Linz's Brian Lebler made his move right in front of goal and netted to give the visitors the lead (11'). The game continued to go back and forth. The Red Bulls built up the play and shot a lot from distance, went for the rebounds and a few times the disc just missed the net. The visitors remained dangerous via breakaways. But it was tight in front of the Linz goal and so they took the lead into the first break.
The first strong action in the second period belonged to Atte Tolvanen, who blocked Shawn St-Amant's shot after he outplayed his opponent with a hook (23'). Shortly afterwards, the Finn fished the shot off the line while lying down and Linz were on the offensive. From the 25th minute onwards, the Red Bulls opened up the game, which now went up and down at high speed. Salzburg then established themselves in the attacking third, but Linz got back into the game with a dangerous power play (29'). With barely five men on the ice, the home side took control of the game again. Drake Rymsha made a nice break against two Linz players, but was then unlucky with his finish (34'). Two minutes later, Peter Schneider struck in the power play (36'), curling the shot from the left face-off circle right into the corner of the net and deservedly equalizing the score at 1:1. That was also the score at the break after 40 minutes.
High tempo, constantly up and down, it could hardly have been more exciting. Both teams played energetically and with a lot of physical effort in the final third, but hardly allowed any opportunities. Tim Harnisch had one in the half-high slot (47'), Luca Auer also worked his way up to the goal once (50'), where it was the end of the line. Benjamin Nissner finally initiated the decisive goal, shooting at the goalie after a 2-on-1 attack and Peter Schneider put the rebound into the net on the left side with his second goal (56'). Atte Tolvanen provided the crowning highlight against six Linz players, the goalie lobbed the disk out of the defensive zone and it was actually to go into the empty net on the other side to the cheers of his team-mates. The Red Bulls won 3:1 and took three hard-earned but well-deserved points against an absolutely equal Linz team.
