The first period started at eye level and ended 3:2 in favor of the Juniors. In the second period, both teams scored one goal each. It was not until the final period that Vadim Schreiner scored to make it 5:3 in the first game of the Austrian championship. With their first win, the Red Bull Hockey Juniors now have the opportunity to secure their place in the final at their home game on January 13.
Course of the game
The first game in the semi-finals of the Austrian championship between Red Bull Hockey Juniors and EC Bregenzerwald started at eye level. Both teams waited patiently for the first mistake and played in a controlled manner. In the 6th minute of the game, however, the home side managed to take the lead through Philipp Pöschmann. The Juniors countered immediately and Kalle Myllymaa equalized again just 19 seconds later (6th minute) after a pass from Vasily Zelenov. The Juniors then played strongly on offense and Maximilian Wurzer scored in the 12th minute to take a 2:1 lead. In the final minute (20th) of the first period, Robert Ossipov scored the equalizer for Bregenzerwald. However, the Juniors countered again through Paul Vinzens (20th) and took the lead again - not just a few seconds later, but also three seconds before the final buzzer.
In the middle third, Bregenzerwald initially slowed the pace of the game somewhat and tried to force the Juniors into making mistakes with experienced moves. However, the guests from Salzburg played with confidence. Daniel Assavolyuk - the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy player had just been with the German national team at the U20 World Championships - increased the lead to 4:2 in the 27th minute. Bregenzerwald then had more chances to score, but the defense around goalkeeper Thomas Pfarrmaier did a great job of defusing them. It was not until the 38th minute that the young Salzburg player had to concede defeat to Laurin Wempe on a follow-up shot.
The pace was high right from the start in the final period. Both teams tried to decide the game in their favor. However, neither team managed to establish a foothold in the opponent's defensive third. The game increasingly shifted to the middle third due to a lot of wasted shots, but there were no dangerous chances. In the sixth minute of the game, Bregenzerwald were able to establish themselves in the Juniors' third for the first time, but were unable to capitalize on this either. It took until the 59th minute when Vadim Schreiner scored the redeeming goal for the Juniors after a pass from Daniel Assavolyuk to make the final score 5:3. The Red Bull Hockey Juniors thus won their first game in the semi-finals of the Austrian championship and now have the opportunity to beat EC Bregenzerwald in the second semi-final game on Saturday, January 13 at 19:15 in the Eisarena Salzburg and thus secure their place in the final.
