Game recap
It took just 48 seconds for Peter Schneider to score the Red Bulls' New Year's goal with a one-timer from close range after a pass from Thomas Raffl. Salzburg could not have got off to a better start and remained the dominant team thereafter. The Red Bulls created several more good chances and regularly caused stress in front of Graz goalkeeper Lars Volden. The home side were dangerous at times, for example with their top scorer Anthony Salinitri, who was only just stopped decisively on a breakaway (10'). Shortly after that, Taylor Matson shot over David Kickert's goal when free on the right wing, but Kickert was on hand to save several more good shots. Overall, the Red Bulls had much more of the play and led 1:0 after 20 minutes.
Salzburg almost scored another early goal at the start of the second period, but Thomas Raffl was fractions too late on a counter-attack at the right-hand post (22'). Graz were now more courageous and opened up the game with their attacking play, meaning that both sides now had good opportunities. Ken Ograjensek had the best chance in front of David Kickert, but was unable to get past the Salzburg goalkeeper. Instead, Ryan Murphy netted in the 32nd minute in the powerplay with a sensitive shot from distance to give the Red Bulls a 2:0 lead, after Troy Bourke had already had the top chance directly in front of goal shortly before (31st). The Red Bulls did not have too many chances, but played compactly and continued to control the action for the most part. The 2:0 lead after 40 minutes was well deserved.
Ken Ograjensek again had a really good chance in the final third (44'). But as before, the home side were limited to sporadic forays as the Red Bulls dominated the game and constantly created danger in the offensive zone. In the final phase, however, the pressure from Graz increased considerably and Sam Antonitsch made the most of his chance to score the equalizer (54'). Suddenly the game was open again, but the Red Bulls immediately shifted the action back to the offensive zone to prevent further chances from Graz and also withstood the pressure in the final three minutes against six Graz players and with a couple of good opportunities to score an empty-net goal. In the end, the Red Bulls deserved to win 2:1 and, as third in the table, reduced the gap to the leaders from Székesfehérvár to three points.
