Game recap
That's what you call bad luck: The Red Bulls started like a shot from a gun and had almost 100% possession at the beginning. But the visitors scored with their very first attack, with former Salzburg player Aljaž Predan luckily deflecting the shot in the air in front of Atte Tolvanen (3rd). The Red Bulls immediately took the initiative again. Peter Schneider deflected a pass just past the goal (6'), Florian Baltram had the half-open goal, but a very acute angle (8'). The Slovenians then straightened the game out a little and became dangerous at certain points, but Salzburg made the game and moved incessantly in front of the visitors' goal. Lucas Thaler tested Ljubljana goalkeeper Luka Kolin with a hard shot from the half-high slot (16'), and Peter Schneider put the ball on the bar again after a nice hook (18'). The visitors had their most dangerous moments during a power play (from the 12th minute), but now there was no getting past Atte Tolvanen. And so the Slovenians took a somewhat fortunate 1:0 lead into the first break.
The home side started strongly again, with many good actions towards the goal. But even during an early power play, the goal wouldn't go in. And then the visitors scored again, Charlie Dodero's long-range shot in the powerplay was not seen by Tolvanen (25'). This time the answer came immediately; Troy Bourke scored from an acute angle in a tangle in front of the goal to make it 1:2 (26'). Atte Tolvanen was then on hand to stop Ville Leskinen's solo effort, but the Salzburg team then had to play five minutes short-handed (Mario Huber sent off early with a length penalty) and Trevor Gooch took advantage to give the visitors a 3:1 lead (35'). Despite further opportunities and constant pressure on the opposing goal, the Red Bulls had to go into the second break 2 goals behind.
The same picture in the final third. The Red Bulls played and created chances, but they were unlucky with their finishing. Then the button finally opened for them. Florian Baltram extended Lucas Thaler's pass in the air and reduced the deficit to 2:3, only 14 seconds later Ali Wukovits smashed the disc under the crossbar with his first goal of the season (45') and fixed the equalizer. A powerplay then brought the Slovenians back into the game, and the two teams now engaged in a thrilling final phase. However, the Red Bulls kept the pressure on - Ali Wukovits struck the bar from the left face-off circle (54') - and were almost impossible to get out of the offensive zone. But it had to go into overtime, where the home side dominated and Ryan Murphy finally redeemed his team with a goal from half-distance (64') to make the final score 4:3. The Red Bulls thus picked up their second point and impressed with a strong home performance overall.
