Game recap
Vienna got off to a good start and recorded their first shot on target in the opening minutes. Salzburg goalkeeper David Kickert was challenged from the outset and was on the alert for good opportunities. After five minutes, the Red Bulls were also in the game and an intense back-and-forth ensued, in which the emotions were not neglected early on. Both teams played out of a tight defense and hardly allowed any opportunities. Tyler Lewington had a good chance in the 15th minute when he had a free shot from an acute angle but was unable to get past Vienna goalkeeper Stefan Steen. The Red Bulls had more of the play in the final minutes and were dangerous with many shots in a good powerplay. After an even 20 minutes, however, the score remained 0-0.
Peter Schneider opened the second period with a breakaway (22'), but could only finish with a backhand. Three minutes later, David Kickert thwarted Hampus Eriksson's great chance at the right post. But then the Viennese went ahead, Lukas Piff shot from half distance at full stretch and hit the crossbar (30'). The Red Bulls responded four minutes later with an equalizer from Peter Hochkofler, who was played free on the right wing in the power play and netted from close range (34'). In the final phase of the second period, both teams took it in turns to create further good opportunities in what remained an evenly-matched and hard-fought game. Intermediate score after 40 minutes: 1:1.
In the final period, the Red Bulls were close to scoring a second goal at the beginning. They pressed and had several really good opportunities, only goalkeeper Stefan Steen prevented Salzburg from taking the lead. However, Salzburg's offensive drive was halted when they were shorthanded and the Capitals took the lead again in the 47th minute with Mathias Böhm's goal on a 2-on-1 counterattack. From that moment on, it was almost all Red Bulls and Dennis Robertson scored from distance in the 55th minute, but after minutes of video review by the referees, the goal was disallowed. Salzburg continued to press, creating a number of dicey situations in front of goal. But then Lukas Kainz scored with a shot across the entire ice into the empty Salzburg goal. Ryan Murphy managed to score the equalizer seven seconds later with a hammer from the high slot, but the Red Bulls were denied an equalizer. They lost 3:2 in Vienna and remain without a win in their third game of the season against the Capitals.
