Game recap
With new signing Drake Rymsha making his debut and without Benjamin Nissner, Philipp Wimmer and Lukas Schreier (all convalescing) and Phillip Sinn (U20 World Cup with Germany), the Red Bulls went into their third game of the season against the KAC. They had their first top chance as early as the 1st minute after a short solo run by Raphael Herburger. The following minutes also belonged to the home side, who played energetically towards the goal and created further opportunities. The Red Bulls slowly worked their way into the game and from halfway through the first period it was up and down. Ryan Murphy (10th) had Salzburg's first chance worth mentioning with a shot from half distance. The fierceness in the duels had already increased in the first period, but neither side allowed much more in front of goal. Thomas Raffl (17') tried a one-timer from close range, but Klagenfurt goalkeeper Sebastian Dahm was on hand and, like his counterpart Atte Tolvanen, did not let anything through before the first break.
In the second half, the Red Bulls were then in control and laid siege to their opponents' goal. Adam Payerl (24') missed the target directly in front of goal with little space, Paul Huber had a good shot from the half-high slot shortly afterwards. Tyler Lewington had the next good chance from close range in Salzburg's now constantly dangerous play (30'). It was not until the 33rd minute that the KAC managed their first good spell of pressure in the second period, but Salzburg were on their guard. Mario Huber produced the next good move in the powerplay (35'). But then Klagenfurt finished off one of their rare counter-attacks to make it 1:0, Manuel Ganahl scoring the follow-up (39') to give the home side a fortunate lead at the break after 40 minutes.
The final period was played with an open goal, with the pace going back and forth. Thomas Raffl (46) fought well in front of goal, where Sebastian Dahm was the final stop, and even before that the KAC just missed Salzburg's goal on a 3-on-2. The Red Bulls then managed the long-deserved equalizer, Adam Payerl was quickest in a short scrum in front of the goal and pushed the disc over the line (47'). It remained open, with Atte Tolvanen deflecting a good shot onto the bar in the 50th minute. Both teams now had chances by the minute, but were unable to get anything over the line in regulation time. The Red Bulls finally decided the game in their favor in extra time, with Ryan Murphy converting Florian Baltram's brilliant cross-ice pass (64') to secure a hard-earned 2:1 win in Klagenfurt.
