Recap
Due to a broken disc, the game started only a quarter of an hour later, but this was not noticeable to the teams. A high tempo was immediately struck and offensively worked to the goal. But the defense of both teams (the Red Bulls without the stricken Ryan Murphy, Benjamin Nissner, Troy Bourke, Chay Genoway and Mario Huber, but with the academy players Devin Steffler, Kalle Myllymaa and Daniel Assavolyuk with his professional debut) stood just as well, most shots ended for a long time on the sticks of the defenders. The game was entertaining, there were no pauses for breath. Goalkeeper David Kickert then prevented a first top chance, came just in time to the concealed shot into the cross corner by Nathan Schnarr (13.). Shortly after, Luca Auer challenged Finnish goalkeeper Jussi Olkinuora right at the post (14.). However, the shots on Salzburg's goal became increasingly dense and in the 18th minute the visitors took the lead. The puck bounced unhappily in front of the Salzburg goal, where Adam Bareš only had to extend it.
Only shortly after the restart (21.) Kasper Puutio shot the Finns on a 2-on-1 counterattack with a goal into the cross corner for a 2:0 lead. The Red Bulls then pushed even more towards the opponent's goal and became dangerous more often. Adam Payerl with an opportunity from an acute angle at the right post (22nd), Tim Harnisch with a covered shot from the half-high slot (26th). Then Devin Steffler took off from the right face-off circle and sank the disc with his first goal with the Salzburg professionals to the 1:2 connection (32.). Lucas Thaler even had the equalizer on the stick, missed the half-open goal on the power play with bad luck (34.). Lahti's Elias Vilen did it better, the striker beat his opponent in a solo and finished with the goal to give the visitors a 3:1 lead at the break.
In the final period, the Finns went ahead again on the power play, Patrik Carlsson scored for a comfortable 4:1 lead (44th). The Salzburgers continued to try everything forward, but were now biting their teeth on defense. No matter what they tried, through the duels, with long-range shots or from breakaways, the Finns were tight at the back and still remained dangerous going forward. Konsta Hirvonen then made it 5:1 in the 59th minute with a deflected shot and sealed the defeat of the Red Bulls, for whom the Champions Hockey League 2023/24 is over.
