Red Bulls lose in Belfast in overtimeThe only goal to make it 0:1 came four seconds before the end of overtime// Champions Hockey LeagueEC Red Bull Salzburg lost their away game against the Belfast Giants in the Regular Season of the Champions Hockey League with 0:1 after overtime.
In an overall even game marked by many penalties, the Red Bulls had their opportunities but conceded the goal four seconds before the end of overtime and thus take only one point from Belfast.
Recap Thomas Raffl got to a backhander in front of Belfast goalie Tyler Beskorowany as early as the 1st minute. The Red Bulls immediately made an effort to lead the game, but rarely created any real scoring chances with a lot of possession on the glass. Like Benjamin Nissner on the powerplay free from the right face-off circle (12.). Salzburg's goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen was initially little busy, then got more to do. In the 8th minute he was on the spot with a good covered shot, also had no problem with the backhander of Miles Gendron (15.). Then it became rougher, fisticuffs and subsequent penalties determined the final phase, in which the Salzburg defense was in focus. The game went into the first break with a balanced shot ratio, but without any goals.
The game remained even in the second half. The game went back and forth and the tempo increased, but still the fight ruled. Many duels, nervous actions on both sides, few shots on goal. Atte Tolvanen kept tight, was not surprised by two dangerous actions directly in front of him (23rd, 29th). And the game became more toxic, the scuffles increased. But with the same team strength, the Red Bulls were then in control. Troy Bourke missed from close range (38th) and Florian Baltram with Ryan Murphy had the best chance for the lead until then on the breakaway 2 on 0 (39th). But also after 40 contested minutes it went scoreless into the cabins.
At the beginning of the final period, the Red Bulls again survived a one-minute 3:5 shorthanded period. After that, it was up and down again, now shooting at every opportunity. Chay Genoway had the first good Salzburg opportunity in the 47th minute from the half-high slot, then Mario Huber on the power play from the right face-off circle (49th). Also in the end, the Red Bulls again had opportunities on the power play, but could not capitalize on them. With the score 0-0, the game finally went into overtime, where both teams had chances at 3 vs. 3. Four seconds before the end, the home side ended a 2-on-1 attack with the decisive goal and thus secured the second point.
Paul Stapelfeldt "Of course that hurts to lose the possible extra point so close to the end. We weren't consistent enough throughout the game and didn't execute things the way we set out to do. It was little things that ultimately contributed to the defeat in total."
