Red Bulls eager for top league match against PustertalSalzburg reaches for the league lead// win2day ICE Hockey LeagueAfter yesterday's game cancellation in Vienna due to a technical defect, EC Red Bull Salzburg continues the regular season of the win2day ICE Hockey League tomorrow, Tuesday, with a home game against league leader HC Pustertal Wölfe (19:15, Livestream).The Red Bulls want to continue the good performance of yesterday's first period in Vienna and remain unbeaten at home against the strong South Tyroleans.

The starting position
The match of the second-placed Red Bulls against the leader from Bruneck is the top match of tomorrow's ICE Hockey League round. The Red Bulls, who failed to score yesterday in Vienna - leading 2-0 after the first period before the game was abandoned - continue to hold a 2-point lead over the Pustertalers, who yesterday suffered their first defeat at home in the seventh game of the basic round against HK SZ Olimpija. The Red Bulls have also lost only once in six games so far.
With a 3-pointer, the Red Bulls could pass Pustertal and take the top spot in the table. However, danger also threatens from below. Four teams - Villach, Székesfehérvár, Feldkirch and Ljubljana - on the places 3 to 6 are in direct reach on the upper table region and are therefore in lurking position.
The opponent
With the cut in the squad (14 departures, 13 additions) and several notable new arrivals in the summer such as the league-experienced Rick Schofield (from Nuremberg) and Alex Petan (from Székesfehérvár), the experts had Pustertal again as a playoff candidate on the screen. The fact that the team of head coach Tomek Valtonen, who joined Bruneck last year at the end of November, would immediately storm to the top of the table with the best offense (27 goals) probably came as a surprise within the league.
Less surprising is the performance of Alex Petan, who was already last year in Székesfehérvár top scorer and now with 7 goals (!) and 2 assists also in Bruneck leads the scorer rating. Followed by David Morley and Rick Schofield with 4 goals each. The latter had already played for Salzburg in the 2020/21 season and should therefore still know parts of the team well.
With only 12 goals conceded, the Red Bulls have the best defense. But Pustertal also makes it difficult for their opponents at the back and, like VSV, has only conceded 16 goals so far. One of the reasons for this is the strong goalkeeping team with Andreas Bernard, a veteran with a past in Bolzano, and Jacob Smith, who has been in goal for Pustertal since last season and currently has a catch rate of 94.3%, as does Salzburg's Atte Tolvanen.

"You could already see in the off-season that they have strengthened well. You can see that now in the standings, they are top of the league and we are excited about the duel. We have to be very careful in the back because they have a really good offense. Still, we'll focus on our game and want to put in the best performance."
