Red Bulls Salute | Final
After Biel took a 4-0 lead in the first period, the Red Bulls narrowed the gap to 4-2 in the second. However, the Swiss team regained a four-goal advantage in the final period, securing a well-deserved victory. Munich had previously claimed third place with a 3-2 win against HC Dynamo Pardubice.
Highlights EC Red Bull Salzburg vs. EHC Biel-Bienne
Game Summary
The Red Bulls got off to a disastrous start. After just four minutes, the Swiss team was already leading 2-0, with Lias Andersson scoring on a rebound (2nd minute) and Dominic Zwerger netting a well-placed shot from a sharp angle (4th minute). Salzburg kept pace and created some good scoring opportunities, but most of them were thwarted by Biel's tight defense. Biel played efficiently and scored twice more in the first period. Mark Sever scored with a one-timer after a nice passing play (15th minute), and then, on a power-play shot by Gaetan Haas, the puck unfortunately deflected off goaltender David Kickert and into the net (18th minute). 0-4 after 20 minutes.
But Salzburg rallied. Within two minutes, the Red Bulls had pulled within one goal at 2-4. Benjamin Nissner scored on a 5-on-3 power play (23rd minute), and shortly afterward, Jayden Lee added another on a simple power play (24th minute). This helped the Red Bulls find their rhythm, even though Biel maintained the pressure and continued to dominate possession. The Red Bulls battled tenaciously and created several good scoring opportunities, but all of them were thwarted by Biel's towering goalie, Viktor Östlund. The score was 2-4 after 40 minutes.
In the final period, both teams seemed to step up their game, resulting in end-to-end action. However, shots on the Biel goal were hard-fought, and penetration was difficult. In the 47th minute, Yanick Stampfli scored with a backhand from close range to make it 5-3 for Biel, effectively ending Salzburg's hopes. These hopes were completely dashed two minutes later when Toni Rajala extended the lead to 6-2 after a textbook passing play. The Red Bulls continued to press and showed fighting spirit until the final whistle, but they couldn't change the outcome and ultimately finished the tournament in second place.
Statement by Alan Letang
"The Swiss ruthlessly capitalized on their opportunities; that was one of the biggest differences. I was pleased with how we reacted in the second period and worked our way back into the game. We wanted to play against teams that challenge us and force us to step outside our comfort zone. The intensity with which we played this tournament definitely deserves high praise."
