Red Bulls Salute | Game for 3rd Place
Game Summary
Despite injury concerns – three players were sidelined after yesterday's semifinal against Salzburg – Red Bull Munich initially played on equal terms with HC Dynamo Pardubice. Both teams maintained a high tempo, just like on the first matchday, and initially allowed few scoring opportunities. However, the shooting improved, and in the 14th minute, Tobias Rieder put Munich in the lead with a one-timer from close range. Pardubice responded, upped the tempo, and equalized before the first intermission (20th minute) when Miguel Tourigny scored on the power play with a one-timer from a sharp angle.
In the second period, the Czechs had significantly more of the play, with Munich's goaltender Antoine Bibeau thwarting numerous good chances for a considerable time. Veit Oswald then had a good opportunity after a short breakaway from a sharp angle (30th minute). This only briefly gave the Germans an offensive boost, as Pardubice quickly regained control. They then took the lead again when Daniel Gazda scored to make it 2-1 (39th minute).
Pardubice retained possession of the puck in the final period but struggled against Munich's solid defense. The Red Bulls then unleashed their fighting spirit. Former Salzburg player Lucas Thaler scored the equalizer on the power play in the 50th minute, prompting the Czechs to raise their game again, but they continued to find themselves up against a brick wall. Jeremy McKenna finally scored just before the end (58th minute), turning the game around and securing a well-deserved victory for Munich against the Czech champions, a win that was well-earned based on their final-period performance.
