Red Bulls Salute | Semifinal
In a high-class game, the Czech champions had more possession overall and took a 2-0 lead after a quickfire double. However, the Swiss improved as the game progressed, equalized in the final period, and ultimately secured the victory in overtime. The second semifinal game between EHC Red Bull Munich and EC Red Bull Salzburg starts at 7:30 p.m.
Game Summary
It was thanks to Biel's goalie Harri Säteri that the Czech champions didn't take an early lead. A strong power play from the second minute onward, followed by continued pressure on the Swiss net. The tall Czechs were able to exploit their physical advantage for a considerable time, although without scoring. The Swiss struggled to relieve the pressure initially, but improved as the period progressed and increasingly kept Czech goalie Roman Will busy, though without truly troubled him. After a fast-paced first period, the teams went into the first intermission scoreless.
The second period continued at a high tempo. And with Biel's first power play, during which the Swiss also showcased their technical prowess, the Czechs struck twice. Matej Stransky converted a cross-ice pass in front of the net with a one-timer (24th minute), and 90 seconds later, Tomas Vondracek fired an unstoppable shot from the slot (25th minute). Pardubice continued to struggle to get out of the offensive zone. A fine individual effort brought the Swiss back within one before the second intermission, however, with Marcus Sylvegard left unmarked and with a clear shot on goal, scoring to make it 2-1 at the break (36th minute).
Biel pressed forward even more in the final period, and the game became more intense. The Czechs kept up the pressure, however, and the final period developed into a high-intensity, back-and-forth affair. Biel tied the game at 2-2 in the 47th minute after a goal by captain Gaetan Haas during a scrum. Both teams had excellent scoring opportunities in the thrilling final minutes, but overtime was needed to decide the winner. And that's where the Swiss capitalized on their numerical advantage. Aleksandr Yakovenko scored on the power play (62nd minute), sending EHC Biel-Bienne to the tournament final.
