WC 2026 in Switzerland

Austria misses out on quarterfinals, but remains firmly in the top divisionCaptain Peter Schneider: "I'm proud of the boys"// IIHF World ChampionshipWith a 1-4 defeat against the USA, the Austrian national team finished their group stage matches at the World Championship in Zurich, securing sixth place in Group A and remaining in the Top Division.
In their final match against the USA, the Austrians gave it their all and tried to make the impossible possible. The Olympic champions, who had stumbled a few times on their way to the quarterfinals, showed no weakness against the determined Austrians. The red-white-red team thus finished the World Championship in sixth place in their group with three wins, also securing 11th place overall, and remaining firmly in the top division. This marks the seventh consecutive tournament in which the Austrian national team has managed to hold its own and impress among the 16 best teams in the world.

Impressions of the last game vs. USA
Head coach Roger Bader looked back on the World Championship with overall satisfaction. This was also true considering that several top Austrian players were missing and the team had to gel with some new additions. After the final game against the USA, the Swiss coach said they had performed well – and that certainly applies to the entire tournament.
Captain Peter Schneider
"Looking back, we're annoyed about a few things, but I'm incredibly proud of the guys and how they fought until the very last shift. If someone had told us before the World Championship that we'd be sitting on nine points and in contention for the quarterfinals, we would have taken it immediately. I hope we can learn from this for the future and carry this momentum forward."
Zurich was also a worthwhile trip from Salzburg's perspective. Peter Schneider, along with Klagenfurt's defenseman Thimo Nickl, was the team's top scorer with six points. Benjamin Nissner, along with Leon Wallner and Vinzenz Rohrer, was the top scorer for Austria with three goals each.
Austria's World Championship History
Since 2018, the Austrian national team has consistently been a top-tier team, surprising the world's 16 best teams on numerous occasions. Their 8th place finish at last year's World Championship in Sweden and Denmark was their best result in 31 years. In recent history, Austria's longest continuous run on the world's biggest ice hockey stage was eight consecutive years from 1998 to 2005. The current World Championship in Switzerland marks Austria's seventh consecutive appearance in the top division (the 2020 and 2021 World Championships were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
