WM 2026 in Swiss

Austria's Strong Start at the World ChampionshipBig Step Towards Staying in the League// IIHF World ChampionshipWith victories against Great Britain and Hungary in their first two group games at the IIHF World Championship in Zurich, Austria's national team has virtually secured its place in the league. Now the team wants more.
Six points from the first two games against Great Britain (5-2) and Hungary (4-2) – the Austrians have thus extracted maximum points against their two direct competitors in the fight to avoid relegation and put themselves in a comfortable position for the remainder of the tournament. They even hold the top spot in Group A in the interim standings, although this is, of course, only a snapshot in time.

Impressions from Zurich
"The next goal is the third win, whenever and against whomever it may be," says a satisfied Head Coach Roger Bader. Opportunities to achieve this come in the next two games at Zurich's Swiss Life Arena against Latvia (Tuesday, 4:20 p.m.) and Switzerland (Wednesday, 4:20 p.m.). With two goals and two assists, Salzburg's Peter Schneider leads the Austrian team not only as captain but also as Austria's top scorer so far. Benjamin Nissner has also contributed a goal and an assist, while goaltenders David Kickert and Atte Tolvanen have each recorded a successful game.
Austria's World Championship History
Since 2018, the Austrian national team has consistently been a top-tier team, surprising many among the world's 16 best teams. Their 8th-place finish at last year's World Championship in Sweden and Denmark was their best result in 31 years. In recent history, Austria's longest continuous run on the world's biggest ice hockey stage was eight consecutive years from 1998 to 2005. The current World Championship in Switzerland is Austria's seventh consecutive tournament in the top division (no World Championships were held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
