WM 2026 in Switzerland
Captain Peter Schneider summed it up perfectly after the 0-9 defeat against Switzerland: "The smallest mistake, which might not be so bad against other teams, is immediately punished here." He was referring to the Swiss, who are in excellent form and have once again placed themselves among the top contenders for the title. Last year at the World Championship in Sweden and Denmark, the Swiss were only defeated 0-1 in overtime by the USA in the final.

But the Austrian team's true potential was demonstrated by their third victory against Latvia. The Bader squad had to work hard and patiently for the win, but were ultimately rewarded with a 3-1 victory and three points. After former academy player Tim Harnisch opened the scoring and Latvia equalized, Benjamin Nissner put Austria back in the lead with his goal. Vinzenz Rohrer then sealed the win with an empty-net goal.
This weekend, the action continues with games against Germany (Saturday) and Finland (Sunday). Peter Schneider is focusing his team on the game against Germany, where they aim to secure more points and move significantly closer to the quarterfinals: "Nothing's happened yet, but we have to learn from the Switzerland game and do better next time." With 5 points, the Salzburg forward (tied with Klagenfurt's Thimo Nickl) remains the top scorer for the Austrian team.
Austria's World Championship history
Since 2018, the Austrian national team has consistently been a top-tier team, surprising many among the world's 16 best teams. Their 8th place finish at last year's World Championship in Sweden and Denmark was their best result in 31 years. In recent history, Austria's longest continuous run on the world's biggest ice hockey stage was eight consecutive years from 1998 to 2005. The current World Championship in Switzerland is Austria's seventh consecutive tournament in the top division (no World Championships were held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
