Head Coach EC Red Bull Salzburg
This is the third coaching position in Europe for the Canadian-born Letang, who holds dual Canadian and Croatian citizenship. Before his most recent stint in Germany – he stepped in as coach in Weiden on short notice in February of this year – he worked as an assistant coach in Zagreb and spent many years coaching in the Canadian junior league OHL.
Statement Alan Letang, Head Coach EC Red Bull Salzburg
“I'm very familiar with EC Red Bull Salzburg from my time as a player in the EBEL. In my discussions with Helmut Schlögl, it quickly became clear that we share a completely aligned vision of where we want to take this team – that made the decision incredibly easy for me. Just like during my playing days, I strive tirelessly for improvement as a coach. There's no better place to do that than an organization like the Red Bulls, which strives for excellence in everything it does. Building on this culture and being a part of it is a huge step forward, and I can't wait to get started.”
Statement Helmut Schlögl, Managing Director Pro
"With our new Head Coach, we have gained a coach who impressed us throughout the entire interview process with his highly professional and clear approach. He represents a modern coaching approach and sees himself as a true team player who places great value on effective collaboration. His open and approachable manner is particularly important to us – a clear open-door policy that promotes direct communication with the players and builds trust. In addition, he brings valuable experience from working with top talent in Canada, which perfectly aligns with our focus and our responsibility in player development. We are convinced that he will provide important impetus both on and off the court.”
Letang's Return to the ICE Hockey League
The Canadian's coaching career began in 2014 as an assistant coach for Medvescak Zagreb (KHL), where he had previously played for many years as a defenseman and captain. In 2016, he returned to Canada, where Letang worked for many years in the OHL as an assistant and head coach of the Owen Sound Attack and as head coach of the Sarnia Sting. From 2019, he also served as an assistant coach, and later as head coach, of the Canadian U18 and U20 national teams. He won two gold medals each with the U18 team at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the U20 team at the U20 World Championship.
Last season, Letang returned to Europe and took over as head coach of the Blue Devils Weiden in the DEL2 in February. Under his leadership, the club successfully avoided relegation from the second division in the relegation playoffs.
As a player, Letang played 14 games in the NHL and, after four seasons in the DEL (Hamburg Freezers and Nuremberg Ice Tigers), also made a name for himself in the then Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. With HC Innsbruck (2008/09) and Medvescak Zagreb (2009-2013), the former defenseman regularly faced the Red Bulls. In 2013/14, he played another season with Zagreb in the KHL before concluding his playing career with Zagreb's second team in the Croatian league until 2015.
