Course of the game
The home side started the game with a lot of momentum and pinned Salzburg (without the injured Chay Genoway and Ryan Murphy) into the defensive zone in the first three minutes. However, the Red Bulls soon took up the fight and an intense back-and-forth ensued with many tough duels, but still limited goal action. That changed and the good shots increased on both sides. Martin Stajnoch had Fehérvár's first top chance (10th), but was unable to break through alone in front of Atte Tolvanen. Rasmus Reijola, the Hungarian goalie, was also not outwitted by Lucas Thaler's hammer shot from the face-off circle. The home side then created a lot of danger in front of Salzburg's goal during a powerplay with two or three good rebound opportunities. Right before the break, the Red Bulls also had a strong powerplay, but were unable to score before the first intermission.
The second period began with a goal from Csanad Erdely, who converted a rebound directly in front of Atte Tolvanen shortly after the restart to make it 1:0 (21'). And then things went from strength to strength. Mario Huber equalized in the power play by tapping in the rebound from the boards from an acute angle (25'). Less than two minutes later, Andrew Rowe passed into the goal area and hit Scott Kosmachuk, who curiously deflected the shot straight into the net (26'). The Hungarians replied, Chris Brown was in the right place at the left post with a follow-up shot to make it 2:2 (29'). But then the Red Bulls went ahead twice; Benjamin Nissner increased the lead with a direct shot from a tight angle (31') and Tyler Lewington put the ball into the corner of the net after Thomas Raffl's dream pass into the slot (34'). The Red Bulls then dominated the game in the final phase of the third period and took the 4:2 lead into the break after 40 minutes.
The Hungarians immediately put pressure on Salzburg's goal at the start of the final period, but the Red Bulls extended their lead with their first attack. This time, Thomas Raffl received Peter Schneider's pass directly in front of goal and beat the goalkeeper with a hook (42'). The home side continued to fight and also created chances, but the Red Bulls were now playing very calmly and had a few top chances themselves. Chase Berger finally managed to score the hosts' third goal (59') before Lucas Thaler scored into an empty net two seconds before the end to make the final score 6:3.
