Course of the game
The first period was perhaps the most intense in the quarter-final duel with Fehérvár AV19 so far. It was straight to the point, with hardly any interruptions in the proverbial battle for every inch of ice. The visitors were just as offensive-minded as the Red Bulls and gave them a tough fight. Evenly matched at the start, with more offensive zone time for the home side towards the end. A number of chances resulted from rebounds in front of the visitors' safe goalkeeper Rasmus Reijola. His counterpart Atte Tolvanen had more to do, especially in the opening period. After a high-intensity third with an equally high tempo, but still little compelling in front of goal, the teams went into the break goalless.
Peter Schneider redeemed the Red Bulls in the first powerplay shortly after the restart, curling the disc over the goalie's shoulder into the short corner from an almost impossibly tight angle (23'). And the Red Bulls went one better on the very next powerplay, Benjamin Nissner extending Ryan Murphy's shot to give them a 2:0 lead (28'). The visitors put up a fight and forced Atte Tolvanen to intervene decisively in two or three tricky situations, but with the lead behind them, Salzburg now pushed forward more and defended well at the back. After 40 minutes, the Red Bulls led 2:0 thanks to two powerplay goals.
In the final third, the game went up and down at an unbroken high tempo, both teams had opportunities and shot a lot from distance. And it became more emotional, with the scuffles and hard tackles increasing. However, the Red Bulls then had more of the play again and caused a number of explosive scenes in front of the Hungarian goal. Florian Baltram was then on the run during a solo run (54'), but was rudely stopped. Peter Schneider had the next goal on his stick in the ensuing power play (54'). There was another brief moment of danger when the visitors took their goalie off the ice three minutes before the end. But a penalty ended this advantage prematurely and then the Red Bulls celebrated another deserved 2:0 win against the Hungarians, who again found no means to crack the Salzburg defense.
