Course of the game
With a lot of pressure and a hammer shot from Ryan Murphy just over the goal (3rd), the Red Bulls, for the first time this season with a complete lineup, welcomed their opponents from Hungary. Two minutes later, Benjamin Nissner bent the disc over the line for an early lead, Székesfehérvár goalkeeper Rasmus Reijola was unable to hold on to it after a Thomas Raffl shot. Salzburg kept the pressure on and created further top chances. The visitors made pinpricks in attack in the first period, but were not yet able to challenge Salzburg goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen. The Red Bulls remained the team that set the tone, sometimes just getting a little bogged down in the attacking zone. However, the lead after 20 minutes was well deserved.
Just 18 seconds after the restart, Benjamin Nissner extended Ryan Murphy's shot in the power play and secured his sixth brace (!) of the season (21st). This time, however, there was a quick response: 21 seconds later, Csanad Erdely scored after a solo run and reduced the deficit to 1:2 (21'). After that, the game was more even, with the Hungarians now regularly getting into the attacking zone. However, the Red Bulls still had a chance advantage, for example with Thomas Raffl's sharp cross that Benjamin Nissner narrowly missed at the near post (53') or Thomas Raffl's short solo run (39'). After 40 minutes, the Red Bulls still led by one goal.
In the final period, both teams initially struggled to create good chances. The Red Bulls also had to play short-handed twice, which also gave Mario Huber a chance after a solo run across half the ice (47'). Things then became more intense, with both teams stepping up a gear. In the power play, the Red Bulls finally made the preliminary decision. Peter Schneider completed a dream combination with Thomas Raffl on the left wing and scored from an acute angle to make it 3:1 (54'). Shortly afterwards, Niki Kraus touched the bar during a solo run under pressure (55'). Four seconds before the end, the visitors managed to score again with six field players through Chris Brown, but then the Red Bulls finally celebrated a deserved 3:2 home win and took a 1:0 lead in the quarter-final series.
