Game report
Without Vadim Schreiner, Moritz Warnecke (both Red Bull Munich), Nick Maul (U20 World Cup) and the ill Mathias Böhm and Jesse Juhola, the Juniors started at their usual high tempo in Merano. Both teams made their mark early on, with goalkeepers Valentin Ankirchner and Andreas Bernard called into action. In the 9th minute, Paul Schuster converted a pass from Maxim Eliseev and Maximilian Wurzer to give his team a 1-0 lead. Merano responded promptly: in the 11th minute, Reid Stefanson scored with a one-timer after a quick transition from Rasmus Nousiainen to make it 1-1. The home team then created more pressure, with Ankirchner making several crucial saves. Shortly before the break, the Red Bulls got back into the game.
After the restart, the Juniors sought their next goal with a man advantage, while Merano defended compactly and waited for mistakes. Salzburg focused on forechecking, but the South Tyroleans made it difficult for them to move quickly toward the goal with their defensive approach. After further penalties against the visitors, Merano took advantage of a late power play and Filip Cruseman scored in the 40th minute to make it 2-1.
At the start of the final period, the Juniors earned a power play, which expanded into a two-man advantage. Maxim Eliseev scored in the 44th minute after a pass from Adrian Gesson to tie the game at 2-2. Salzburg pushed hard for a third goal but found themselves repeatedly shorthanded. Ankirchner remained solid, while Merano continued to pose a threat on the counterattack. With no goals scored in regulation or overtime, the game went to a shootout. The Juniors failed to convert any of their attempts, while Samuel Claesson scored for Merano to seal a 3-2 victory.

Head Coach Teemu Levijoki
"We had to contend with a few absences today and played with four U17 players. We did well considering that. Nevertheless, it's now time for the younger players to take on leadership roles, and that's not easy. We're still in a learning process. Basically, we played well but took too many penalties and made life difficult for ourselves. We had chances but couldn't capitalize on them. "
