FTC Telekom Budapest vs. Red Bulls
In what was a fairly even game overall, the home side took the lead in the first period, which Connor Corcoran managed to equalize in the second. However, after the Hungarians took the lead again before the second break, there was no time left to equalize. The Red Bulls were unable to convert their rare chances into goals and ultimately suffered a narrow defeat.
Highlights FTC Telekom Budapest vs. Red Bulls
Game summary
The Red Bulls, with Maximilian Wurzer replacing Peter Schneider in the lineup due to illness, dominated early on. Troy Bourke capitalized on a turnover by the home team with a powerful shot from the left face-off circle (4th minute). However, the first goal went to the Hungarians, with Tyler Coulter scoring after a 2-on-1 counterattack with a hook against Atte Tolvanen (8th minute). This turned the momentum around, with the Hungarians suddenly putting a lot of pressure on the Salzburg goal. However, the Red Bulls continued to create chances, with Nash Nienhuis firing a one-timer from mid-range (11th minute) and Brandon Coe shooting from the slot (15th minute). Atte Tolvanen made a strong save during the FTC's first dangerous power play, and after 20 minutes, the Hungarians led 1-0.
The second period saw a good exchange of blows, with the Red Bulls now playing a slightly more offensive game. Luca Auer had the first top chance from close range (24th minute). It was then Connor Corcoran who caught Hungarian goalie Bence Balizs off guard from a sharp angle during a power play and equalized to make it 1-1 (26th minute). It was back and forth. Ferenc Laskawy was just stopped by Atte Tolvanen after a short solo run (33rd minute), and shortly afterwards Benjamin Nissner had a chance in the slot (34th minute). A supposed goal by the Hungarians was disallowed due to a clear offside position (34th minute), but at the end of a power play, the home team took the lead again to make it 2-1 at the break (39th minute). The Red Bulls regularly played themselves into promising positions, but lacked the spark to finish.
Budapest remained dangerous and forced the Red Bulls onto the defensive in the opening minutes of the final period. Andras Mihalik found himself free in front of goal (45th minute), but was stopped by Atte Tolvanen. Salzburg then opened up the game in search of an equalizer and pushed the pace. However, real chances were few and far between. Devante Stephens had one from mid-range (54th), but the follow-up shots also failed to find the net. In the final minutes, the Red Bulls increasingly shifted the game into the attacking zone, interspersed with highly dangerous Hungarian counterattacks. A power play in the 57th minute then thwarted Salzburg's attacking plans, even if it had no consequences. In the final minute, however, it was not enough to equalize and the Red Bulls had to leave their first game in Budapest without any points.
Statement Manny Viveiros
Statement by Manny Viveiros
"It was disappointing today. We had difficulties in defense and were unable to create much offense. We still showed strong defensive play, but we need to fight our way through situations like this even more. The Hungarians' performance deserves recognition without question, but not all of us showed our best today, and that was the difference."
