After their 2-6 opening defeat against Slovakia, the Austrians more than made up for it at the Deutschland Cup last week in Landshut with a 5-2 victory against hosts Germany. Even in their final 2-4 loss against Latvia (which included an empty-net goal), the Austrians came close to earning a point, a feat made more difficult by the early start time – the game began at 11 a.m. As a result, head coach Roger Bader's team finished in fourth place, tied on points with third-place Latvia. Germany celebrated their tournament victory after a final 3-0 win over Slovakia.
Statement by Peter Schneider
“I’m proud of our team. At the end [in the game against Latvia], we even had a chance to get a point. The overall assessment of the tournament is mixed. We started very poorly against Slovakia in the first period, then played two very good periods, the incredible win against Germany—the best preseason game I’ve ever seen—and now another mixed performance against Latvia. I think we can take a lot away from this tournament; we’ve learned a lot.”
David Kickert, Atte Tolvanen, Mario Huber, Peter Schneider, and Lucas Thaler represented Austria from the Red Bulls team. Benjamin Nissner had to withdraw at short notice due to injury.
Wednesday: Champions Hockey League Round of 16
After the IIHF break last week, during which the Red Bulls who remained in Salzburg continued training diligently after two days off, the next big highlight is on the schedule this week: In the CHL playoff round of 16, the Red Bulls will face DEL representative ERC Ingolstadt. The first leg will take place on Wednesday, November 12th, in Ingolstadt. The second leg will follow on Wednesday, November 19th, at the Salzburg Ice Arena (7:15 pm, Sporteurope.tv).
